Calhoun County Airport hosted its annual Kid’s Aviation Day on Friday, May 7th. Over 315 students from Travis Middle School and Seadrift School visited the fixed base operator (FBO) ready to learn about the aerospace community and differences between various planes.

“The kids were exposed to so many benefits that airports offer — from emergency transport to economic impact on the community,” said Dianna Stanger, Calhoun County Airport Manager. “It’s always my favorite day of the year, the kids’ interest inspires us do bigger, better events each year.”

The students rotated around sixteen different stations: the National Weather Service, Cessna 172, Cessna 182, Calhoun Air Center flight instructor, Hawker-Beechcraft Premier Jet, Robinson R44, Maule MX-7-180, Air Tractor, Civil Air Patrol, Precinct 2 Commissioner, PHI Air Medical Helicopter, Mid-Coast R/C Flyers, Experimental Helicopter, Flight Simulator, U.S. Coast Guard, Sailplane and Port Lavaca Fire Department.

“This year we were able to give the children of Calhoun County the most comprehensive aviation experience yet; we had more volunteers at more stations than any year prior.” said FBO manager, Steve Plunkett. “I cannot express my thanks enough to everyone who came out and supported this fantastic event.”

The day is made possible by a group of pilots that are eager to share their passion for flying and their knowledge with the students.

“The kids really enjoyed themselves,” Travis Middle School teacher, Chris Scroggs commented. “They learned about the wonderful world of aviation. We appreciate Calhoun Air Center’s hard work in putting together such a wonderful event.”

The students were able to sit in the aircraft and learn first hand about the principles of flight and aircraft operations.

“We really enjoyed having the opportunity to interact with the Calhoun students. They were very excited and enthusiastic about the R44 helicopter. It was fun watching them get in the helicopter, try on headsets and pretend to fly — definitely have some young aviators in the making,” said Chief Flight Instructor-Rotocraft, Toni McCarthy.

In addition, the students received a take home bag which contained various pilot magazines, pens, pencils, rulers, bookmarks, posters, interactive cds and more. Thank you to all of the sponsors: Texas Department of Transportation Aviation Division, Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), Whirly Girls, Women Of Aviation Worldwide (WOAW), Inteplast, FlightSafety, Jeppessen and Hawker-Beechcraft.

This marks the fourth year which Calhoun Air Center has coordinated the field trip introducing over 1,250 students to the careers in aviation available to them.

Being a pilot is much more than about having a passion for flight. True aviators and aviatrixes enjoy to utilize their passion to help others. In this case, local pilots are taking flight to complete a very special mission and help two organizations, Pilots N Paws and Great Escape Rescued K9s.

Each year, the volunteers of Pilots N Paws save thousands of lives. Those lives come in the form of any animal that can be transported using a plane. Dogs, cats, pigs, reptiles and rabbits are just a few who have taken one of their flights.

The flight began at Calhoun County Airport (KPKV) with pilots, Dianna Stanger and Mike Solomon departing into a clear beautiful sky on an IFR (Instrument flight rules) flight plan. The mission — to transport a German Shepherd that was four years old named Sista to Cleburne Regional Airport (south of Fort Worth) and transport a second dog, Buddy, who was rescued from a kill shelter in Arlington on the return flight.

Pet overpopulation is a disturbing problem in the United States. More than 4 million no-longer-wanted pets are euthanized each year. While spay/neuter programs have worked to decrease domestic animal populations in some parts of the country, other areas are considered high-kill. A staggering 70% of dogs that enter shelters in the southern part of the country are euthanized. Until now, there have been few options for these innocent victims. Pilots N Paws is helping to change that.

Chyrl Burris, co-founder/co-director of Great Escape Rescued K9s brought the German Shepherd to the Calhoun County Airport (KPKV). “We started Great Escape last summer when we were made aware of the plight of hundreds of German Shepherds being killed in “kill” shelters in Los Angeles, California. We decided we were going to try to help save some,” Chyrl said. Since then they have rescued 50 Texan and 39 Californian dogs! They also rehabilitate the rescue dogs to save in order to help them find a great forever home.

Stanger said, “Sista was a very sweet girl who seemed to sense that any journey she was on was taking her to a better place than the list she had been on to be euthanized. The little girl, Kylie Delafuentes, who got Sista will have a friend for life as Sista touched everyone the day we moved her, she could’ve easily been adopted four times just while we had her.” The pilots and pup arrived at Cleburne Regional Airport in just under an hour.

“It was great from the very beginning when we met our young German Shepherd passenger for the flight,” Solomon commented, “with the aircraft doors wide open, the dog jumped right in just like she’s been riding in airplanes for years. She was calm and relaxed the whole flight, I didn’t much notice she was there, except to pose for the occasional in flight pictures with her.”

By simply looking at the request board on the Pilots N Paws web site will give you an idea of the hundreds of dogs a day that need to get somewhere. The site provides a location where private pilots willing to contribute free transport, and people and organizations who rescue, shelter or foster animals, could connect to save lives. Today the organization, Pilots N Paws, has 2,466 pilot volunteers and 8,281 volunteers.

“Buddy, a sweet little guy, took the back seat over and then insisted on trying to join us in the cockpit while flying to his new family back in Victoria,” Dianna said with a smile.

At the moment, Chyrl has rescues that need transit to and from Austin, Hutto, Cleburne, Wharton, Houston and Los Angeles, California. She says, “I love to use Pilots N Paws. They are awesome!”

As this was the first time for both pilots to fly for Paws N Pilots it is easy to see that it will become de rigor in Calhoun County. “It’s something I hope to do often. It’s doing something I love, and at the same time helping bring a deserving animal who would otherwise face euthanasia, to a loving family.” Mike said, “Who wouldn’t want to do that?”

Mike has flown over 160 hours total. He has a high performance endorsement and around 15 hours in a high performance airplane. “As for IFR, I’m about 10 hours into my training. My goal is to progress through my training to the point where aviation becomes my chosen career.”

Pets touch peoples lives and the gift of getting a pet to a forever home is a very special ability that makes pilots better pilots and people. For students it is an opportunity to travel with a seasoned pilot mentor and reach their ultimate goal while completing a very worthwhile mission.

AUSTIN—Brianna Salinas, a student at Calhoun High School in Port Lavaca, was the first place winner in the statewide competition for an entry in the 2012 International Aviation Art Contest. She competed in the 14- to 18-year-old category.

Brianna, age 15, received a certificate and was recognized for artist talent during the 30th Annual Texas Aviation conference held in Galveston recently.

“The Calhoun County Independent School District (CCISD) consistently is able to have their students compete on a Texas State level and excel. It is with great pride that Calhoun County Airport is able to announce the winner of this year’s annual contest in a field of over 1200 entries this year,” airport manager, Dianna Stanger proudly stated.

Brianna is a second year art student at CHS and this is her first time entering the annual contest. Her artwork utilized acrylic paint and portrays an autumn scene, which she chose because of the yellow and orange color combination. “I wanted to feature a little girl who aspires to be a pilot and is always watching planes while holding a balloon,” Brianna explained. She says she has always loved to draw, and has enjoyed drawing more and more realistic scenes. Her piece was submitted as an assignment for class, which she earned an A on, and then submitted to the state for judging.

The theme was “Silent Flight.” Entries were judged in one of three age groups, 6-9 years, 10-13 years, and 14-17 years. This year, 1,440 students and 109 schools participated in the art contest statewide.

The annual International Aviation Art contest is sponsored by National Aeronautic Association, supported by the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, in association with the National Association of State Aviation Officials, National Coalition for Aviation Education, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI), the Ken Cook Company and the National Business Aviation Association, Inc. (NBAA.)

First place winner, Brianna Salinas and Calhoun High School art teacher, Nick McIntyre at the 30th Annual Texas Aviation conference.

The art contest is designed to motivate and encourage young people of FAI-member nations to become more familiar with and participate in aeronautics, engineering and science.

The 30th Annual Aviation conference was co-hosted by the Texas Department of Transportation, Texas Airports Council and Texas Aviation Association. Participants included airport managers, city and county officials, the FAA and others interested in aviation in Texas.

Brianna hopes to pursue art in college and specialize in digital graphic design. Her winning piece will be featured in the 2013 TxDOT Aviation Art Calendar which is distributed to all of the CCISD schools. Calendars are due to arrive in late September. She is the fourth student from Calhoun County to be featured in the annual calendar. Calhoun County Airport has submitted over 800 pieces of artwork in the past three years to TxDOT’s annual aviation art calendar contest.

Port Lavaca, Texas – Calhoun Air Center is proud to sponsor Girl Power 2 and honor the Women of Aviation of the past and the present as well as to reach out and introduce girls and women to the opportunities that aviation has to offer. Airport manager, Dianna Stanger will be defending her title after 98 flights in a helicopter during last year’s Women of Aviation Worldwide Week.

Our aviation community organizes a celebration of all Women of Aviation Worldwide (WOAW) annually in March during international women week. Women of Aviation Worldwide Week is a week of awareness and action.

Pilots Dianna Stanger and Victoria Holt have announced they will be giving the gift of first flights on March 10 and 11, 2012 at the Calhoun County Airport and Victoria Regional Airport. Girls that are interested in aviation will have the opportunity to receive a discovery flight free of charge if they are a part of a non-profit organization or church group in Calhoun or Victoria County. Dianna commented, “The flight is free, the experience of flight is priceless.”

2012 marks the 101st anniversary of International Women’s Day. International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. A paid holiday in some countries, March 8 is a day of gratitude, reflection, and action.

Together the pilots will be defending World titles as well as going for additional titles while enjoying the gift of first flights in a helicopter and airplane. The first year the crew was extremely successful flying away with several titles:
2011 ‘Most Dedicated Female Pilot Worldwide’
Winner – Dianna Stanger, Port Lavaca, TX, USA, Eurocopter EC120 (98 flights)
2011 ‘Most Creative Aviation Advocate’
Jasmine Gordon, Port Lavaca, TX, USA
2011 ‘Most Female-Pilot-Friendly Airport Worldwide’
2nd runner up – Port Lavaca (KPKV), TX, USA (98 flights)

and this year… we’re going above and beyond
2012 ‘Most Female-Pilot-Friendly Airport in the World’
2012 ‘Most Dedicated Female Pilot in the World’
2012 ‘Most Supportive Male Pilot in the World’
2012 ‘Most Unusual Introductory Flight’
2012 ‘Most Creative Aviation Advocate’

Plus there are contests the girls can enter in the following categories; art, writing and photography! Details may be found below. Women of Aviation will award prizes!

The global IWD theme in 2012 is the year of the “H”. Indeed, in 1912, Hélène Dutrieu of Belgium (1877 – 1961) became the first woman ever to pilot a seaplane and Harriet Quimby of the United States (1875 – 1912) became the first woman ever to fly across the English Channel in an airplane. To celebrate the centennials of these worldwide accomplishments, the theme for the 2012 Women Of Aviation Worldwide Week will be “seaplanes”.

This is sure to be an event not to be missed, rides are free for qualified participants. To schedule your group please call Jasmine Gordon at 361.746.8846. Shaping the face of tomorrow’s aviation industry, one life at a time, is our common goal.

www.calhounaircenter.com

FOR IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE

What a year it has been for the Calhoun Air Center! It has flown by for us. So as we usher in the holidays and a new year, we’d like to take a moment and look back at some of the notable events of 2011.

The airport improvements that began in 2010 were completed during the first part of this year and included our apron expansion and runway overlay. The results were fantastic and our airport has never looked better. The new apron has especially come in handy during events like the Poco Bueno fishing tournament, during which we had record breaking traffic and sales, and our annual Kid’s Day where three hundred local sixth graders rotate between twelve aviation related stations learning about everything from fire and rescue, helicopters, to commercial agricultural operations. I’d like to send out another big “thank you” to all the volunteers that took time out to educate our local youth.

We also set up our new Victoria flight school office. Flight training operations were now based out of a newly remodeled facility on the airport property and made instruction more accessible to area residents. It also gave us a hub to operate from for events such as the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) International Learn to Fly Day, May 21st, and the Wings of Freedom weekend, April 1-3rd, where we provided flights to participants and promoted aviation to the large crowds that came out.

The staff at CAC was able to take time to attend several conferences this year to include the Texas Aviation Association (TXAA) Conference in Austin, a Cessna Pilot Center Seminar in Orlando, as well as an AOPA flight training seminar in Addison. Local high school student Melissa Albrecht was present at the TXAA Conference and was recognized for her third place in State aviation art contest entry. Calhoun Air Center again sponsored a local art contest to provide submissions to the International art competition. We truly enjoy getting to meet with the many people in our profession that are out there, year-round, striving to make general aviation and flight training better for all.

March brought another record breaking event to our rapidly growing airport as we hosted an event for Women of Aviation Worldwide Week (WOAW). Award winning promotion from Jasmine Gordon and record breaking dedication from airport manager Dianna Stanger brought the joy of flying to women of all ages. Stanger took the women ages 2-86 up for a quick flight around the town. Over the two day event, 98 women were able to get a taste of flight. Efforts did not go without notice as Stanger was awarded Most Dedicated Female Pilot in the World and Gordon Most Creative Aviation Advocate by WOAW.

Stanger’s passion for aviation extends well beyond Calhoun County. For ten days in June she and teammate Victoria Holt participated in the Air Race Classic, the nation’s oldest all female air race, with notable entries such as Amelia Earhart. They competed against over one hundred other contenders and made time along the way to stop and conduct radio interviews and meet with young women interested
in aviation.

Our first annual Monster Bash was a great success. We hosted a 5k run/walk, local EAA Chapter 340 were present giving Young Eagles flights, hay rides, costume contests, flour bomb and golf ball drops were all schedule. Twenty-two vendors were present selling items and numerous volunteers brought it all together. Read more at our newly revamped website, www.calhounaircenter.com

.

Our flight school took delivery of a brand new 2011 Cessna 172SP with the G1000 avionics suite in November and the students have loved the new plane smell. Congratulations go out to Mike Solomon, who completed his private pilot certificate, and to Frank Maestri, Kevin Pruett, Mike Nichols, Virgil Saylor, Kevin Hill, and Ryan Dias for soloing. Good luck to all our students working towards their ratings!

As we recap the year, thank you to all who have become a part of our PKV family! You have greatly contributed to the success of this airport; the year’s memories have helped make this year better and bigger than ever! We welcome 2012, there’s much in store, so stay tuned. Aviation should be a part of our everyday lives, concluding 2011; we thank all of those that have helped achieve that goal.

Calhoun County Airport (KPKV) is pleased to announce the 3rd Annual Calhoun Air Center Art Contest winners. The winners and family gathered at Calhoun County Airport on Saturday, November 20th for the local Art Contest’s Awards Ceremony. Entries were judged the week prior by the Port Lavaca Art Guild which were categorized into three age groups. First, second, third place and two honorable mentions were chosen in each. The 2012 theme was, “Silent Flight.”

“This year’s art contest theme, Silent Flight, gave the students a lot of latitude as to what they could base their submissions on, and the artwork that they came up with was truly impressive.” said FBO manager, Steve Plunkett. “Everything from serene hot air balloon landscapes to comic book styled scenes were present and I look forward to seeing how they do at the state level.”

The fifteen winners were awarded art kits and prizes specific to aviation. The airport’s local art contest is structured around The Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) International Aviation Art Contest.

All of the 2011 entries will be submitted to the 2012 Texas Kid’s Aviation Art Calendar Contest which is designed to motivate and encourage children to study aeronautics, engineering and science. Each child will receive a participation certificate from TxDOT Aviation Division in spring 2012. Winners compete at a state, national and international level. Calhoun Air Center has submitted over 700 entries in the past three years from Calhoun County students.

The winners of the TxDOT International Aviation Art Contest will be announced by February 2012; winning contestants along with their family and teacher are invited to TxDOT’s Texas Aviation banquet which will be held on March 29, 2012 @ 6:30 pm at the Moody Gardens Hotel in Galveston, Texas. Following the state-level contest, winners will have their entries sent to be judged nationally.

Calhoun County Airport Hosts First Annual Monster Bash

Saturday, October 29th marked the kick off of the first annual Halloween themed Monster Bash at the Calhoun County Airport, KPKV, in Port Lavaca, TX. The event expanded on the airfields yearly fly in and opened the airport up to the surrounding community.

The morning started out with a 5k Run/Walk, the Monster Dash, sponsored by the Port Lavaca Chamber of Commerce and benefiting the local YMCA. Sixty-seven participants completed the course in a fantastic turn-out for the event’s first year. The race’s participants ranged in age from eight to seventy-eight; awards were presented to the top finishers in their respective age groups.

Local Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Chapter 340 was out in force on the beautiful Saturday flying in members from surrounding airports bringing with them the gift of aviation for the youth of the coastal Texas town. On that day alone, EAA members came together to give Young Eagles flights to 75 lucky children! The flights were offered free of charge to youngsters age eight to eighteen. Representatives from the 1940 Air Terminal Museum out of Hobby airport were present as well selling raffle tickets for their pristine 1958 C-172 that they flew in for the day. A flour- bomb drop, spot-landing competition and golf ball raffle drop were also scheduled.

Ghosts’ and ghouls’ of all ages were out to ring in the Halloween season with creepy classics like bobbing for apples, hay rides, a full pumpkin patch, as well as costume and pumpkin decorating contests. Twenty-two vendors registered for the event selling everything from jewelry and horse feed to turkey legs and bar-b-que. Habitat for Humanity was present raising funds by selling raffle tickets and the local Humane Society brought out pets that were available for adoption.

The costume contest had 70 participants; prizes were awarded to the top two costumes voted on by a panel of judges from the Port Lavaca Art Guild in five age groups, including a canine division. The evening wrapped up with the Trunk-or-Treat, the Calhoun County’s sanctioned “safe trick-or-treat event for the season” where participants decorated the trunks of their vehicles in a Halloween theme, and children donning cute and creepy costumes went from car to car collecting candy. “It is well lit and safe and the children can start celebrating Halloween,” FBO Manager Steve Plunkett said. “I am happy with the turn out. I think it has been a success so far.”
